Carey Mulligan dazzles in a gold strapless gown as she joins Andrea Riseborough and Emily Watson at the British Independent Film Awards

Carey Mulligan led the glamour on the pink carpet at the 2025 British Independent Film Awards at The Roundhouse in London on Sunday night. 

The actress, 40, was joined by Andrea Riseborough, 44, and Emily Watson, 58, for the 28th ceremony, which is held to highlight the most innovative and creative independent filmmaking in the UK. 

Carey, whose film The Ballad Of Wallis Island has five nominations, looked sophisticated in a strapless gold satin gown which had cream chiffon sashes running down the sides. 

The Hollywood starlet had minimal accessories but added a boost to her frame with white heels. 

Andrea, who has been nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance for her role in Dragonfly, wore a plunging black dress while Emily put on a dazzling display in a yellow gold silk gown. 

The trio were joined by a whole host of acting talent, with Ruth Wilson, 43, and Traitors star Celia Imrie, 73, also seen on the pink carpet.

Celia wore an Atlas Carré Royal Solaris Brooch set with lab-grown diamonds and sapphire in grey gold on her white power suit. 

The nominations for the ceremony were announced earlier this month.

Akinola Davies Jr.’s My Father’s Shadow leads the way with 12 nominations, while romcom Pillion gained 10 nominations, followed by I Swear which received a total of nine. 

Robert Pattison and Jennifer Lawrence both scooped nominations for Die My Love, while The Ballad Of Wallis Island and Wasteman both got five.

Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland made their mark by receiving six nominations for war film Warfare, including Best Ensemble Performance.

My Father’s Shadow, a story of two brothers who first come to understand their father at a pivotal moment in both his life and Nigerian history, secured Best British Independent Film, Best Director and The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director), Best Screenplay and Best Debut Screenwriter.

The film also received seven craft nominations, including Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design for 2023 nominee PC Williams, Best Original Music, Best Editing, Best Make-Up and Hair Design, Best Production Design and Best Sound.

Harry Lighton’s debut feature Pillion following the ups and downs (and pleasures and pains) of a budding relationship between two very different men earns him Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Debut Director, Best Debut Screenwriter nominations.

Moreover, it earned Best Lead and Supporting Performance for Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård, three craft nominations (Best Costume Design for 2021 BIFA winner Grace Snell, Best Editing and Best Make-Up & Hair Design) as well as a Best British Independent Film.

Kirk Jones’ touching feature chronicling the life of tourettes campaigner John Davison, I Swear, lines up nine nominations, including Best British Independent Film.

Jones takes Best Director and Best Screenplay nominations, with a Best Lead Performance nod for Robert Aramayo and Best Supporting Performance nominations for Maxine Peake, Peter Mullan and newcomer Scott Ellis Watson, who is also up for Breakthrough Performance sponsored by Netflix. 

Casting director Lauren Evans is nominated for Best Casting sponsored by Casting Society & Spotlight.

Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, a feverish portrait of a woman driven to the edge, collects an impressive eight nominations, including Best Director – which she won in 2011 with We Need to Talk about Kevin.

A Best Lead Performance nomination goes to Jennifer Lawrence and Die My Love’s six craft nominations are for Best Cinematography, Best Effects, Best Music Supervision, Best Make Up & Hair Design, Best Production Design and Best Sound. 

Tom Blyth is nominated for Best Supporting Performance, Cal McMau takes a Douglas Hickox (Best Debut Director) spot, first-time feature writers Hunter Andrews and Eoin Doran earn a Best Debut Screenwriter nomination and Phil Canning gets his second BIFA nomination in Best Music Supervision.

Rounding out the Best Lead Performance nominations is Cillian Murphy for the 1990s-set pressure-cooker school drama Steve, which also sees a Best Supporting Performance nomination go to Jay Lycurgo as well as a Best Casting nod.

The remaining Best Joint Lead Performance nominees are Andrea and Brenda Blethyn for neighbour horror Dragonfly, and Ebada Hassan and Safiyya Ingar for Nadia Fall’s debut feature following two friends who flee the UK for Syria, Brides, which also nets them a Breakthrough Performance nomination each. 

The final Breakthrough Performance nominees are Posy Sterling for her role as a mother fighting for custody of her children in Lollipop, and Connor Tompkins for his role as a man grappling with the fallout from his twin brother’s misdeeds in The Son and The Sea.

Laura Carreira receives Best Director, Best Screenplay, The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director) and Best Debut Screenwriter nominations for On Falling, a scathing portrait of the realities of modern labour. 

Breakthrough Producer nominations go to Wyn Baptiste for activism doc Shoot the People, Charlotte Knowles for cross-border documentary Palestine Comedy Club, Joann Kushner for screenlife heist movie LifeHack, which also gets a Best Editing nod and Dhiraj Mahey for social-realist coming-of-age drama Ish, which also gets a nomination for Best Sound.

Amongst the nominees for Best Feature Documentary sponsored by Intermission Film are Antidote, which charters three whistleblowers’ fight to expose Putin’s regime and The Shepherd and the Bear, which follows an aging shepherd struggling to find a successor as bears prey on his flock.
