‘Messed up’ thriller with 94% rating streaming now on Netflix

Critics praised the film and says it features a Twilight star like never seen before

A ‘messed up’ thriller which boasts an impressive 94% rating is now streaming on Netflix.

The film was originally released in cinemas back in 2024 and is now available to watch in the comfort from your own home. It was added to the service starting today (December 1) with subscribers easily able to discover the title.

According to the film’s synopsis, the story, set in 1989, follows reclusive gym manager Lou who falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. However, their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.

The cast includes Twilight star Kristen Stewart as Lou. She is joined by Katy O’Brian as Jackie who has previously appeared in Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as well as a couple episodes of The Walking Dead. Also starring are Dave Franco and Ed Harris.

While the title was not a massive commercial success, the film was a critical hit upon its initial release. So much so, it registered a 94% score on website Rotten Tomatoes.

One critic praised the lead performances, in particular from former Twilight actor Stewart, in a role that moved her away from audience expectations. They said: “Love Lies Bleeding is an intriguing blend of family crime drama and a twisted love story. The film is propelled by strong performances, particularly from Kristen Stewart, who takes on a character unlike any we’ve seen from her before.”

Another agreed as they penned: “Love Lies Bleeding certainly meets expectations as it stars Kristen Stewart, as never seen before, within this brooding, dark tale depicting love against the odds, a road trip, a criminal thriller and more to unveil a gritty, intoxicating mix.”

One verdict claimed: “An extremely engaging, stylized, and watchable experience that makes excellent use of all of its assets.”

Fans also shared their recommendations as one posted online: “Love Lies Bleeding is a total rollercoaster, and the whole group was all in for the ride. From the moment the film started, everyone was hooked by its raw, intense atmosphere. The movie pulls you into a world of obsession, addiction, and crime, all wrapped in a beautifully bleak and stylish package.”

Another added: “Incredible film!! A steamy, sweaty film that explores toxic abusive relationships through people, substance abuse and familial relationships. I was not expecting the story to turn in that way and the soundtrack was amazing to really immerse you into the film.”

However, some felt the need to warn others over the content. One person commented: “Warning that the film is both sexually explicit and graphically violent. I put that up front because if you start streaming the movie and turn it off, you will likely get the wrong impression of what ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ has to offer. In context, everything in the film that is OTT is meaningfully so. Meaning it isn’t just lazy.”

While someone else described the film as “Tarantino-esque fun and messed up movie with steamy scenes.”

Love Lies Bleeding is streaming on Netflix.
