A man has been jailed after stubbing a cigarette out in a disabled man’s eye in a vile attack captured on CCTV.
David Brown is seen attacking the victim, who had just entered the beer garden of a Nottinghamshire pub on a mobility scooter. Other pubgoers were forced to pull the 40-year-old off the victim, who suffered significant injuries to his right eye in the attack. Police were called to the pub in South Street, Hucknall, on December 29, 2023, where Brown was arrested.
Brown denied a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent, but was found guilty following a trial at Nottingham Crown Court in October. He was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on Friday (November 28).
The court heard that nearly two years later the victim has ongoing issues with his eyesight that require regular hospital visits.
PC Oskar Sereda said: “Brown’s cowardly attack that night was unprovoked and took place as soon as the victim entered the premises.
“It is difficult to imagine the pain he must have suffered during the incident and the emotional and physical impact upon him has been lasting.
“He no longer feels safe living in Hucknall and his parents have suffered considerable financial impact since the incident through time off work to look after their son.
“I’d like to thank the people in the pub that evening who rushed to help the victim and keep Brown away from him before officers were called to the scene.”
