Second teen dies after horror A19 crash as police issue ‘extremely sad’ update

A second teenager has tragically died following a crash on the A19.

The 19-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall Corsa involved in the collision, which occurred on November 24 on the northbound carriageway in Sunderland, passed away on Saturday. A 17-year-old girl, who was a passenger, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Just after 11pm, Northumbria Police received a report of a collision involving the dark yellow vehicle, between the B1404 at Seaham and the A690 Herrington Interchange. It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, the Corsa left the carriageway and then subsequently crashed.

The male driver and female passenger were found to have sustained serious injuries in the collision, and despite the efforts of paramedics, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries following the collision, but sadly he also died, with officers continuing to appeal to any witnesses to the incident to contact them, ChronicleLive reports.

Sergeant Christopher Herron, of Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “This is an extremely sad update. Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of the two young people who have tragically died in this incident.

“The investigation into the collision remains ongoing and we continue to appeal to anybody who may have information which could assist us to get in touch if they have not already done so.

“Your information, no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be, could prove vital as we look to ascertain exactly what happened in this incident.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson previously said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on the A19 northbound between Seaham and junction A690 at 23:03 last night (24 November).

“We dispatched two ambulance crews, one specialist paramedic, one clinical team leader, one duty officer, one HART crew (Hazardous Area Response Team) and supported by a doctor at Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). One patient was taken to RVI hospital for further treatment.”

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service added: “We can confirm that last night (Monday 24th November) two fire appliances attended a car on fire after a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the A19 in Sunderland. The emergency call was received by our Control Room team at 23:03 and two crews from Farringdon Community Fire Station were dispatched to the northbound carriageway of the A19 at Burdon.

“Crews extinguished the fire and assisted our Blue Light colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) with emergency first aid. Our crews left the scene shortly after 00:10.”
