
Motorists are facing huge delays on the M6 this evening following a crash involving a number of vehicles.
National Highways said the motorway has been shut to traffic due to a “multi-vehicle collision” – but no details on the incident have been shared yet.
Diversion routes will be put in place, with congestion building in the area near Warrington, Cheshire.
Where did the crash happen?
The collision happened between J21 and J21A near Warrington, Cheshire.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service issue statement
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have issued a statement, confirming firefighters were required “to get one person out of a vehicle.”
The fire service said: “Firefighters have been called to a road traffic collision on the M6.
“Highways Agency and police are also in attendance, along with staff from North West Ambulance Service, who are supporting casualties at the scene.
“Firefighters have been required to get one person out of a vehicle.
“The carriageway has been closed and traffic management is being provided by Highways.”
Miles of congestion due to M6 closure
The motorway closure has caused miles of congestion.
Traffic is currently backed up to junction 20A as emergency services remain at the scene.
Diversion route in place for motorists
A diversion route has been put in place after the crash.
Road users are advised to follow the solid black square diversion symbol on road signs:
- Exit the M6 northbound at J21
- At the roundabout take the second exit onto the B5210 northbound and follow for approx. 2 miles.
- The the large roundabout with the A574 (Birchwood Way) take the third exit onto the A574 eastbound and follow for approx. 2 miles.
- At the roundabout with the M62 J11, take the first exit and join the M62 westbound.
- Follow the M62 westbound and exit at J9.
- At the roundabout take the third exit onto the A49 northbound.
- At the next roundabout take the third exit and follow the A49/A572 north.
- Re-join the M6 at J22.
Further details on crash
National Highways said in an update: “The M6 in Cheshire is closed northbound between J21 and J21A near Warrington due to a collision.
“At approx. 17:30 a collision involving 2 cars was reported to Cheshire police.
“Police, Fire, ambulance and National highways resources were dispatched to scene and are now in attendance.
“Delays are likely on approach to the closure and diversion routes.”

Northbound carriageway blocked
According to an update from live traffic service Inrix, the northbound carriageway is currently blocked following the collision tonight.
The update reads: “M6 Northbound blocked, stationary traffic due to multi-vehicle accident from J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston) to J21A M62 J10 (Croft Interchange).”
Emergency services remain at the scene, the Manchester Evening News reported.
