A doctor accused of trying to kill his nuclear engineer wife in Hawaii tried to cover his face as he was transferred for his first court appearance.
Gerhardt Konig, 46, allegedly tried to push his 36-year-old wife Arielle Konig off a cliff before he hit her in the head with a rock and attempted to inject her with an unknown substance atop the scenic Pali Lookout in Oahu.
Konig was indicted on attempted second-degree murder charges on Friday by a grand jury. He is now locked up at the Oahu Community Correctional Center in Honolulu while his wife is recovering at The Queen’s Medical Center with her mother by her side.
Arielle told police that during the terrifying attack, the anesthesiologist grabbed her by the arms and started pushing her toward the edge of a cliff before attempting to inject her with a syringe.
The couple was in Oahu to celebrate Arielle’s birthday while their sons, ages 2 and 4, stayed at their $1.5million Maui home with a nanny and family.
Arielle said Konig suggested they go on a hike in Honolulu that she described as having ‘narrow ridge sections with steep drop-offs on both sides.’
‘During the hike, I became uneasy and informed Gerhardt that I did not want to continue,’ she said. ‘Gerhardt hiked a little further and then came back to get me.’
She then climbed a tree so that her husband could take a photo of her, while he held her phone and hiking bag. He then reportedly suggested taking a photo near the edge of a cliff.

‘I asked him to move so that I could move away from the cliff, because I was feeling dizzy,’ she said. He moved.

Later, he grabbed her by her upper arms and started pushing her toward the cliff’s edge while yelling that he was sick of her, Arielle said.
‘At first I thought he was joking, but I quickly realized he was seriously trying to make me fall off the cliff,’ she added.
They began wrestling and she screamed and pleaded for him to stop, fearing for her life, the petition said. During the struggle, she said he grabbed his bag and took out a syringe and tried to inject her.
‘I do not know what was in the syringe, but Gerhardt is an anesthesiologist and has access to several potentially lethal medications as part of his employment,’ she said.
Konig then appeared to calm down, but then grabbed a nearby rock and ‘began bashing me repeatedly on the head with it,’ she said.

Two women on the trail saw what was happening and said they were calling 911.
The women helped Arielle down the trail while Konig went in another direction. An ambulance took her to a hospital and her husband was arrested that evening.
Arielle said Konig called one of his adult children from a previous marriage on FaceTime while still covered in blood. The doctor then allegedly told his son,’ I just tried to kill Ari, but she got away.’
In a petition for a restraining order, Arielle said that in December, Konig accused her of having an affair, ‘which led to extreme jealously on his part.’ They have been in therapy and counseling since, she said.
Arielle said Konig ‘has sexually abused and assaulted me over the last few months,’ according to court documents obtained by DailyMail.com.
A judge signed an order Friday that says Konig must stay away from his wife and their children.

Gerhardt was previously married to sex worker Jessica Patella; The two married when they they were both just 20 and stayed married for over 15 years, sharing two children.
Neighbors said the Konigs appeared to be a happy family who rarely socialized with them but were devoted to their young sons Olin and Viggo.
They moved to Maui in 2022 after Konig secured his ‘dream job’ as a partner at the Anesthesia Medical Group – a medical contracting firm based in the picturesque town of Kahului that supplies anesthesiologists to hospitals throughout Hawaii.
Arielle, meanwhile, worked for Bellevue, Washington, company TerraPower LLC which specializes in nuclear fuels.
