Read Buckingham Palace’s statement in full after King Charles had to cancel royal engagements amid cancer battle side effects

The Palace has released a statement after The King was admitted to hospital this afternoon.

The 76-year-old monarch visited The London Clinic on Thursday afternoon for a brief period of observation, after the side effects became noticeable.

While the King’s hospital dash raised concerns, Buckingham Palace quickly sought to reassure the public, stating that his recovery is progressing in the ‘right direction’ and that the incident was not unexpected.

A palace source revealed that the King’s visit to the hospital was due to the after-effects of his treatment and was ‘not uncommon’ for cancer patients.

Despite the unplanned trip, it was reported that the monarch’s symptoms were temporary and the episode was brief.

Following his discharge, King Charles returned to Clarence House later that evening, where he was said to be in good spirits, working on state papers and making calls from his study.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said:

‘Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital.

‘His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed.

‘His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled.

‘His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.’

The side effects have forced the King to cancel a series of engagements scheduled for Friday in Birmingham.

While some minor adjustments to his diary are possible in the short term, the palace is confident that there will be no significant disruptions to his schedule.

Sources indicate that while the King’s schedule for next week may be slightly altered, his planned state visit to Italy, set for the week after next, is still expected to go ahead as planned.

The King travelled to and from the hospital by car and was not accompanied by Queen Camilla, who had been carrying out her own engagements in Wembley, north-west London, earlier in the day.
