Shocking moment ‘stolen car’ flees police and zooms into oncoming traffic before driver takes off on foot – as 19-year-old is arrested

A driver has been snapped on dashcam fleeing police and zooming into oncoming traffic before crashing and taking off on foot.

The alleged stolen vehicle was reported at 10.30pm on Sunday and was seen shortly after by police officers in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

A chase then ensued between police and the driver, who took off at speed to evade capture.

In scenes captured on police dashcam footage, the car then enters a no-entry lane and begins driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic on the A627.

The driver then swerves into an exit, where they crash into the railings.

A man is then seen escaping the car and attempting to make a getaway on foot.

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, possession of a bladed article, and possession of drugs. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Officers located and seized a machete and recovered drugs after a search of the vehicle.

Inspector Jamie Buchanan, from our Roads Policing Unit, said: ‘This latest arrest is a prime example of the work we are doing on a daily basis to trace stolen cars and remove drugs and weapons from our streets.

‘The driver showed a blatant disregard for members of the public, reaching speeds of over 100mph, and even driving the wrong way on a busy roundabout.

‘Thankfully, no members of the public were injured, but without the quick-thinking actions of the officers involved, this could’ve ended very differently.’
