Thug broke woman’s collarbone after she made fat joke about his friend

A thug has been jailed for breaking a woman’s collarbones after she made a jibe about his friend’s weight.

Darren Quilt, 29, punched the victim so hard that she fell to the ground on Christmas Eve in 2022, snapping both bones either side of her shoulders as she landed.

The incident unfolded at around 3am after the victim and her male companion made a joke about Quilt’s friend, who was wearing a grey jacket, looking pregnant.

Prosecutor Jonathan Dickinson said Quilt then approached the couple and became abusive towards the male who was with the female victim.

She was trying to intervene when Quilt punched the right-hand side of her face, resulting in her crashing to the floor on her left shoulder, suffering two broken collarbones.

A passing police officer came across the incident and arrested Quilt, who was heavily intoxicated.

When taken to the police station, Quilt did not initially co-operate and gave the wrong details.

It was then discovered that he gave the officers the wrong name because he was subject to bail conditions for other matters.

Mrs Megan Fletcher-Smith, defending, said Quilt was ‘remorseful and ashamed’ wanted to apologise to the court for his late guilty plea.

In an impact statement, the victim said she ‘no longer’ felt safe going out at night and had lost income due to not being able to work while her injuries healed.

Quilt, of Mulberry Road, Dudley Fields, was sentenced to to 13 months imprisonment at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Friday after admitting the offence of wounding.

He must serve at least half of his sentence before being released on licence.
