We’re a nation that’s absolutely mad about air fryers – but let’s face it – they can be a bit of a nightmare to clean. One of the top perks of using an air fryer is the ability to ditch the tin foil, baking sheets or trays – just chuck your food directly in and your food is being cooked.
However, grease and leftovers might stick to the basket if you don’t use a liner. Sometimes, no matter how much elbow grease you use, those stubborn stains refuse to shift. Nancy Emery, a cleaning expert at Tap Warehouse, explained how it’s vital to give your air fryer a good scrub after whipping up each meal – or you’ll be battling with grime later on.

Meanwhile, Lyndsay – the cleaning content creator and homeware expert known as @norfolkavenue on TikTok – reckons air fryers are “one of the easiest things to clean” if you know her nifty method.
Lyndsay explains: “How to clean your airfryer! Literally so easy. All you need to do is add bicarbonate soda also known as baking soda, washing up liquid and boiling water into your air fryer basket.
“Let it soak for 30 mins and use a scratch resident sponge to clean off any excess.”
Showing her followers how it’s done on TikTok, she kicks off by getting rid of any crumbs lingering in her air fryer. She then chucks in three hefty scoops of baking soda into the basket.
To top it off, she splashes in some washing-up liquid – her choice is Fairy Original, but she says any dish soap will do the trick for this hack.
Snagging a 200g packet of baking soda from Tesco will only set you back 65p, with their washing-up liquid coming in at just 69p. In the meantime, Sainsbury’s is tempting shoppers with a 450ml bottle of washing-up liquid for a mere 62p.
Lydsay dives into action by pouring boiling water into the basket, ensuring full submersion and setting the stage for a “effortless cleaning” experience.
She leaves it soaking for half an hour, claiming that her nifty method easily lifts grease from the air fryer.
To wrap up her cleaning routine, she discards the murky water down the sink and gives the air fryer tray a quick once-over with a sponge.
A final rinse of the tray and basket restores their shine.
