Alec Baldwin’s wife has explained how two of their children were born just five and a half months apart, revealing that Alec affectionately calls them ‘twins’ because of their special connection.
With seven children in the mix, the couple’s parenting exploits are currently being showcased on their reality show, The Baldwins, which airs on TLC stateside and is up for streaming on Max. Meanwhile viewers in the UK can catch up via Discovery+.
The newest episode delves into Hilaria Baldwin’s experiences of motherhood, touching on everything from managing a lively household to the diverse approaches they’ve taken to expand their family. In a touching scene, Eduardo, 3, and his sister Maria, also known as Lulu and aged 3, are perched on a seat facing the lens. When Hilaria quizzes, “who are The Dedes?”, the siblings endearingly point at one another.

She probes further, “Why are you guys named The Dedes?” but gets only a shrug from Eduardo. To the audience, Hilaria elaborates, “Edu and Lulu are five and a half months apart. Alec likes to call them twins, they are not twins. They came up with calling each other Dede when they were younger. They point at each other and say ‘you Dede, no you Dede’. It’s become this silly little term that they come up with that is their version of twins,” reports the Mirror US.
Spending time making homemade granola with Lulu, Hilaria gets candid about her journey through motherhood and the heartbreak of childbearing. She opens up about her personal battles, revealing that she went through two miscarriages, the latter following a round of IVF – a period she describes as the lowest point in her life.
But Hilaria’s desire to grow her family remained strong. “When I had my miscarriages I didn’t know what to do. I felt it was important to open a door of possibilities. Moving forward I had this embryo and I was terrified of having another IVF baby after the traumatic loss I had. My fear is that if I was going to put her (the embryo) inside of me, I was going to kill her.”
She shares how surrogacy became part of her plan before an unexpected development: “So I connected with people who had done surrogacy, I met this really amazing woman who ended up carrying Mary Lou and I find out I’m pregnant naturally.”

The story takes a surprising turn as she adds: “I found out I was having Edu and so we (Hilaria and her surrogate) ended up pregnant at the same time. So Edu was born and then LuLu our surrogate baby came months later.”
Despite the varied approaches to expanding her brood, Hilaria stands firm on the notion that each of her offspring is cherished equally and fits seamlessly into their tight-knit family. She shared: “In the end we have our loving family but it’s not the same path that my other babies were born but she feels the same, she’s still connected to me. It doesn’t feel different. She’s my baby. So I think just embracing what is, understanding that the one thing you know for sure, you’re going to love your kids so much it hurts.”
The Baldwins is streaming every Monday on Discovery+.
