Alexander Isak and Arne Slot enjoyed a heart-warming moment after the Liverpool striker ended his long goal drought during Sunday’s 2-0 win at West Ham.
The Sweden international, who joined the Reds from Newcastle United for a Premier League record £125million during the summer transfer window, netted his first for the club, on his third appearance, against Championship side Southampton in the Carabao Cup on September 23.
Many felt that Isak would kick on from there, but the former Borussia Dortmund man hasn’t quite hit the ground running at Anfield. Indeed, he had failed to score in his last seven appearances for the Reds before the trip to the London Stadium.

However, Isak found the back of the net for the first time in more than two months, as he scored Liverpool’s first goal in a much-needed win against the Hammers. In the 60th minute, he got on the end of Cody Gakpo’s pullback before drilling the ball into the bottom corner.
It was a composed finish from the 26-year-old, who lasted another eight minutes before leaving the pitch and being subbed off for Hugo Ekitike. As he walked off, Isak was embraced by Liverpool head coach, Slot, who has come under increased pressure due to his side’s recent form.
But there was all smiles between Slot and Isak, with the Dutchman going in for a hug and also a handshake to the striker, who embraced him before walking to take his place on the bench.
Liverpool went on to double their lead in stoppage-time through Gakpo to secure a vital three points, and a first win in four matches.
Speaking post-match, Slot praised Isak. “He’s a top striker,” he said.
“This finish was very good. I kept him in just long enough for him to get a goal for the team and himself.”
Isak, meanwhile, cut a relieved figure after scoring his first Premier League goal for the Reds.
“I’ve been waiting for it and chasing it [his first Premier League goal for Liverpool] and, sometimes, it takes longer than you expect but happy to score a goal and help towards the win today,” he revealed.
“It’s never easy, as a striker you need momentum. Sometimes you go through this patches but, hopefully, this will be helpful towards building good form. We defended really well and scored twice so happy days.”
The win moves Liverpool back into the top half of the Premier League table – sitting on 21 points from their 13 matches. Reflecting on a huge result, Slot said: “A win and that was what we mainly needed and we got a clean sheet as well which is always helpful.
“Not giving anything away to the other team as a gift as we have done far too many times this season. The other team hardly created a chance except in the final minute through [Jarrod] Bowen.
“West Ham made it a difficult game for us. but we did very well defensively.
“The good thing was that they only had one chance.”
