BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent issued an apology to viewers after news bulletins were pulled from the airwaves during the latest programme.
Host Sally interrupted the show on Monday (December 1) ahead of a news segment to inform audiences that a fire had erupted at the BBC’s Glasgow headquarters, which had affected the broadcast in Scotland, reports the Express.
She told viewers: “Now, just before we get the news where you are, we just want to extend an apology to viewers in Scotland where bulletins have been taken off air this morning following a fire at the BBC’s Glasgow headquarters.”
Her co-host Jon Kay then added: “Yes, in a statement, the team in Scotland say that they’re grateful to the emergency services for their rapid response and they’re working to ensure the safety of colleagues and restore TV and radio services as soon as possible.”
Sally went on: “So, if you think you are seeing the wrong news this morning, that is why we are working really hard to get things back on track and keep everybody safe.”
Footage of the BBC’s Glasgow building was then broadcast, revealing a fire engine stationed outside the premises.
Jon then moved on, telling viewers: “In the meantime, let’s get the news, the travel and weather where everybody else is.”
It emerged later that the fire alarm at the Pacific Quay facility went off at approximately 6.30am on Monday, with the building being evacuated for two hours, with all staff leaving the premises.
The blaze at the building is believed to have originated in a plant room. Firefighters were on the scene within minutes.
The BBC reported that the BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast was taken off air, and that it was replaced by pre-recorded music. Additionally, breakfast television news bulletins from Scotland were also suspended.
In a statement, the BBC said: “We’re grateful to the emergency services for their rapid deployment on site.
“We’re working hard to ensure the safety of all of our colleagues and will restore our regular services on-air as soon as we can.”
BBC Breakfast is broadcast from 6am on BBC One.
