Cleaning experts have warned that these common items are one of the most overlooked items when it comes to household cleaning

One frequently overlooked household item could be harbouring dangerous bacteria due to insufficient cleaning, experts have warned. Whilst most of us diligently hoover, mop and dust our homes, certain items can slip through the cracks and become breeding grounds for unwanted germs.
Research suggests the average Brit hasn’t washed their rugs or runners since June. Experts are now urging households to give them a thorough clean, which could help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.
Rugs and runners should ideally be cleaned once a month, yet 40% of people in the UK fail to do so. Instead, people typically wash these items every five months on average.
With winter approaching and central heating being switched on, allergens can easily circulate throughout homes. Experts have cautioned that dead skin cells and faeces from dust mites can remain trapped in home textiles until they’re properly washed.
These particles can then spread around the property when the heating is turned on. Shockingly, one in 10 Britons has washed their mats and rugs just once annually or even less frequently, reports the Express.
Specialists at Kleen-Tex Home are therefore urging households to clean their rugs before switching on their heating to prevent allergens and dirt from circulating throughout the house.
Michelle Byrne, Product Marketing Manager, said of their Homeware Buyers Index research: “Our research shows that mats and rugs are one of the most overlooked items in the home when it comes to cleaning.
“They’re used multiple times every single day, often in high-traffic areas like the front door, hallways and living rooms, and they’re designed to absorb dirt and dust – yet people don’t give them the same care as bedding or cushion covers.
“Washing rugs monthly should be seen as a household essential, and machine washing is the most effective way to remove dirt and bacteria while saving time.”
Expert tips on how to clean your rugs
1. Shake out loose dirt
Begin by taking the rugs outdoors for a good shake or beat to dislodge dirt. This helps remove dust that the vacuum cleaner might leave behind and can eliminate potential allergens.
2. Vacuum every week
Aim to vacuum the rugs at least once weekly. Increase this frequency for rugs in busy areas such as hallways and lounges.
3. Wash monthly
Pop machine-washable rugs in the washing machine at least once every month at 40°C or above to eliminate bacteria and ingrained dirt.
4. Tackle stains
When a stain appears, deal with it immediately. Blot spills using a clean cloth and gentle detergent.
Don’t rub as this can force the stain further into the fibres.
5. Dry thoroughly to avoid mould
Always ensure rugs dry completely following washing to stop mould and unpleasant smells developing. Air drying works best, though you can tumble dry on a low setting if appropriate after checking the care label.
