A former Premier League and England footballer was reportedly arrested on suspicion of attempted rape after being detained a Stansted Airport.
The Sun reports that the former Premier League star was stopped at a passport control point in the airport. His details are understood to have shown he was wanted by police over a non-recent allegation of attempted rape reported by a former partner, it is claimed. Border Force guards stopped him before he could board his flight on Sunday night.
Officers from Essex Police were alerted and travelled to Stansted Airport to arrest the suspect. He was driven to a local police station where his fingerprints, DNA sample and mugshot were taken.
The individual was held for several hours before being released on bail pending further inquiries. The complainant has been interviewed by specialist sex crimes officers and offered counselling and support.
Essex Police said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 while we continue our enquiries.”
