Now’s the ideal time to spruce up your lawn – and this six-step routine promises a lush, green finish. The lawn often takes centre stage in our gardens, but getting it summer-ready can be trickier than you’d think. Lawns require regular TLC to stay in tip-top shape.

But if you’re new to gardening and unsure where to start, this six-step guide is just what you need to navigate the ins and outs of lawn care. The method comes from an avid gardener who spilled the beans on his process after people marvelled at his lush lawn and begged him to share his secrets.

This six-step routine will transform your patchy, yellowing lawn into a vibrant green carpet, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. Shared by Canadian broadcaster and author Roz Weston on his TikTok account, he demonstrated how he rejuvenated his sparse lawn over five weeks using these six steps – but be ready to get your hands dirty.

First off, you need to give your lawn a good mow, cutting it right down to the ground. But don’t worry, as the gardening enthusiast assures that “worry, your grass is going to be fine, it loves this”.

Next up, you need to aerate your lawn – basically making regular holes in it to boost drainage and root growth.

Roz does this using a specialised machine, an aerator, but if you’re not keen on renting or buying one – and have a smaller lawn – you can simply use a garden fork.

Just make sure to clear any leftover soil from the turf before moving onto the next step. Then, you need to blanket your entire lawn with sand, carefully working it into the grass and the holes you’ve made with a rake.

“You want the grass to stand up through the sand, so keep working it in,” he advises, demonstrating that by the end of this process, his grass is visible again through the sand.

Once you’ve completed this stage, your lawn will be crying out for a drink, so if you have sprinklers, now’s the time to switch them on.

Following this, Roz explains, you need to scatter grass seed all over your lawn to stimulate new growth, before adding a layer of peat moss which will help your turf retain plenty of moisture.

Roz then gives his lawn another thorough watering, before laying down a layer of fertiliser. Then all that’s left to do is sit back, relax and let the lawn makeover work its wonders. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s so worth it,” the avid gardener shared in his video.

In the comments section beneath the clip, one viewer who’s a pro in turf management showed some love with: “As a lawn care technician, I approve,” while another admirer was taken by the endgame, adding “Well done man, it’s beautiful!” about the finished job.
