Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid ‘shocked’ after devastating news update

Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid was left speechless on Monday

Good Morning Britain star Susanna Reid was left “shocked” after a devastating news update on Monday (December 1).

During today’s edition of the hit ITV programme, Susanna and her co-host Ed Balls updated viewers on the latest news from across the UK and around the world.

They were joined in the studio by Sean Fletcher, who handled the rest of the day’s news, while Laura Tobin delivered regular weather forecasts.

Later in the show, Susanna shared devastating news after two men who carried out a machete ambush were jailed for 28 months.

“I’m not sure if you read about this last week, but I have to say, I was absolutely shocked by a story,” the star admitted, reports Wales Online.

“Two knifemen lured a man to an address, chased him down the street. They were captured on CCTV wielding machetes as they pursued the man in Eastfield, North Yorkshire.

“This is a case that has come to court, it happened back in April. Very distressing pictures. The unnamed victim ran for his life and, luckily, was unhurt. Police investigated and then the people who were running after him, two men in their twenties, discovered that he actually wasn’t their intended target.

“On Wednesday last week, they were each sentenced to a jail term, they each got 28 months. I found this utterly staggering. When we talk about the surge of knife crime and we know, all of us, the horrific crimes that are caused and the devastation that happens as a result of knife crime. How two men in their twenties, running after a victim, are sentenced to just over two years in prison [is shocking].”

Ed added: “The argument is because they didn’t actually harm him, you can’t convict them for what they intended to do. You can only convict them for what they actually did, and what they did was they chased him.”

The Mirror’s Kevin Maguire then shared: “It doesn’t feel long enough. There are lots of people in prison with short sentences, it doesn’t do them any good, it costs us a lot of money and they come out worse.

“If you pick up a machete, two of you with machetes, and you’re going after to cause serious harm to somebody, whatever they’ve done to you… Awful. I think [the prison sentence] should just be longer.”

Susanna concluded: “We’re trying to send a message on knife crime in an era where knives are causing so much harm and distress.”

Shortly after the ambush, Detective Constable Alfie Thomlinson, from Scarborough and Ryedale CID, said: “This was an audacious attempt to cause significant harm to the victim… This behaviour and actions simply will not be tolerated here in North Yorkshire and detectives will work hard to track perpetrators down and bring them to justice.”
