Man arrested on suspicion of murder after body found on Northampton canal bench

Detectives investigating the death of a man who was discovered fatally injured on a bench in a UK town centre have made an arrest.

Police officers were called by the East Midlands Ambulance Service at about 6.30am on Friday, August 1, after 57-year-old Robert was found fatally injured on a bench on the towpath behind Auctioneers Court. A murder investigation was launched and over the past six days, a number of enquiries have been taking place to try and identify who was responsible for his death.

Now, Northants Police have issued an update on their investigation and confirmed a 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. The force confirmed he remains in police custody at this time.

Despite an arrest being made police are continuing to investigate the incident. They are urging anyone who may have information to come forward.

Detective Inspector Torie Harrison, who is leading the murder investigation, said: “Although we have made an arrest, we continue to follow a number of lines of enquiry and are still very keen to speak to anyone who may have information about Robert’s death who has not yet come forward.

“Specially trained officers continue to support Robert’s family at this devastating time and anyone who can help us piece together the events which led to his death is encouraged to come forward.
