Mariah Carey was honoured with an icon award at the iHeartRadio Awards on Tuesday – but fans claimed ‘there is something off’ after her speech
Singer Mariah Carey has sparked concern from fans after giving a ‘slurred’ speech at an awards ceremony. The 55-year-old Fantasy and Heartbreaker hitmaker was honoured with the Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
But as she gave her acceptance speech it left fans asking: “Should we be concerned for Mariah Carey?” as another fan commented: “There is something off.”
As she took to the stage in true diva style, Mariah – who was presented with her gong by rapper LL Cool J, who she has collaborated with in the past – joked: “Is the lighting okay? Because I don’t like bad lighting.” While her speech received laughter at the start, her words appeared to become slightly slurred as it went on.
She ended by honouring her late mother Patricia, who died last year at the age of 87. Tragically her mum’s passing came on the same day Mariah’s sister Alison died aged 63. It is thought her sister died in hospice care in New York and had previously battled substance abuse issues.
At the time Mariah said: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” In her speech, she added: “I want to honour my mother, Patricia Carey, for giving me the gift of music. Thank you so much. Love you, love you, love you.”

The speech was later posted on social media, but fans had questions. One asked: “What is happening??? Is she okay?????” Another agreed and said: “Something isn’t right….” A third commented: “I was wondering the same thing. Something is definitely off with her.”
Some suggested her recent family losses could be to blame as they said: “She’s a legend! Bless her you can see she’s missing her mum very much.” Another wrote: “Not the conspiracies. She lost her mother and sister on the same day a couple of months ago + a break up after 7 years of relationship and bipolar disorder, give the woman a break.”
Others speculated her split with 41-year-old dancer Bryan Tanaka, who she broke up with in December 2023 after seven years of dating, could also be a factor.
One fan said: “Tbh Mariah hasn’t been the same since around the time she broke up with Tanaka. Ever since, she’s been completely lip syncing, very lethargic looking and just all around not the same Mariah overall. It seems like her health has drastically changed for the worse unfortunately. Hope she gets the help she needs to get better.”
Another fan added: “I’ve been really concerned about her since last year tbh. She always just seems low energy and out of it. It may sound weird to say but I hope that it’s just her still recovering from the loss of her mother & sister and not something more.” The Mirror have contacted Mariah’s reps for comment.
