Newcastle are set to turn their attention to AC Milan‘s Malick Thiaw as they prepare to lose out on Benjamin Sesko with Manchester United his preferred destination this summer.

The Magpies have endured a difficult window with a number of their targets choosing to look elsewhere. But Eddie Howe is looking to land the defender from the Italian club having already seen a bid for Thiaw rejected by the Rossoneri.

Reports in Germany claim that a fresh offer is likely to come from Newcastle. The German international’s versatility has proved a huge plus with Thiaw playing centrally, as a right-back and a defensive midfielder in the past.

Negotiations continue between the Premier League side and their Serie A rivals, whom they played in the Champions League two years ago. Schalke, who Thiaw played for before his move to Milan, also stand to benefit from any possible deal due to their sell-on clause.

So far this summer Newcastle’s only major signing has been their £55million capture of Anthony Elanga, who joined after an impressive year at Nottingham Forest. He will bolster their frontline but other than him Howe has struggled to get new faces through the door.

Their latest blow could come with Sesko potentially heading to Manchester. The Red Devils are increasingly confident of signing the Slovenian from RB Leipzig after the striker indicated his preference to join the club with both options available to him.

Newcastle are interested in Sesko and made the first move with their initial bid, but the young striker favours a move to Old Trafford, where he is due to sign a five-year deal. The Magpies can offer Champions League football, but that doesn’t seem to have been enough to tempt him.

The problem for Newcastle is they want to get a top class striker through the door before they allow Alexander Isak to leave the club. The Swede is pushing for the exit door with Liverpool eyeing up a move that could cost them as much as £150m if the Magpies valuation is met.

Isak has been told to train away from the first-team having also missed their pre-season trip to Asia. He would leave a huge void in the Newcastle attack with Howe also seeing the likes of Joao Pedro, who was on his shortlist, opt for Chelsea ahead of a move to St James’ Park.
