One in three Brits skip Christmas parties due to toilet troubles

One in three people could give Christmas gatherings a miss because of constipation, figures released by Movicol showed, with the festive season presenting particular challenges

Overindulging Brits risk missing out on festive fun this Christmas, as one third of revellers admit they skip parties when having toilet troubles.

One in three (34%) of people said they avoid social gatherings when constipated, according to a survey.

Research by Movicol revealed that almost 80% of Brits have been constipated on holiday, with 21% saying it ruined their precious downtime.

The festive season presents similar challenges with an increase in booze consumption often leading to dehydration, which can worsen constipation.

This coupled with indulging in rich foods, moving less and disrupted routines can trigger an uncomfortable gut, which can quickly turn merriment into misery.

The ‘Constipation State of the Nation Report’ revealed there’s still a stigma among Brits sporting a stiff upper lip when it comes to discussing bowel habits.

More than one-third (34%) of stoic adults admitted they feel uncomfortable discussing their toilet habits with friends and family.

Those quizzed in the study said they’d even rather discuss taboo dinner table topics such as money, politics and religion with pals than their bowel habits.

This discomfort is amplified around Christmas when Brits are more likely to be sharing bathroom facilities with others around or even in public.

Brad Read, Global Medical Director from the Movicol Brand, said: “The festive season is a time for connection, joy and a little indulgence, but it’s also a period where our routines go out the window. Our diets often become richer and less balanced and we tend to move less.

“This combination can be a recipe for constipation, turning what should be a magical time into one of frustration and discomfort. Our research shows just how much constipation can impact our ability to feel our best and enjoy social events. This is particularly poignant during Christmas, especially when navigating busy households and shared bathrooms.”

Movicol’s top five tips for a gut-happy festive season

  1. Hydrate Amidst the Hype. With more alcohol and rich foods, it’s easy to forget water. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help keep things moving and counteract dehydration.
  2. Holly Jolly Gut. Enjoy festive treats but try to balance them with fibre-rich foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
  3. Jingle All the Way and Keep Active. Even a brisk walk to see Christmas lights or a dance at a festive party can help stimulate digestion and maintain blood flow to the bowels.
  4. Don’t Delay. If you feel the urge to go, don’t put it off. Delaying can make constipation worse, and you certainly don’t want to be hogging the family bathroom.
  5. Your Little Christmas Helper. Having a gentle and effective constipation treatment on hand means you can quickly address any symptoms and get back to enjoying the celebrations without bathroom anxiety.
