Sheffield Wednesday have been deducted a further six points by the EFL after going into administration. The latest sanction relates to breaches under former owner Dejphon Chansiri.
It follows an automatic 12-point deduction for entering administration meaning they have now been docked 18 in total. It leaves the Owls on -10 points, rock bottom of the Championship and a mammoth 27 points from safety.
The club failed to pay players and staff on time in five of Chansiri’s last seven months at the helm. There were also missed tax payments and transfer fees owed to other clubs.
An EFL statement read: “Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations, with the club’s former owner, Mr Dejphon Chansiri, prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years.
“The sanctions on both the club and Mr Chansiri can be confirmed after the parties reached an agreement on the appropriate sanction which was subsequently ratified by the chair of the appointed independent disciplinary commission.”
Fans mobilised against Thai tuna magnate Chansiri, starving him of cash and ultimately leaving him with no choice but to place the club into administration.
Supporters boycotted the club shop, food and drink kiosks and home cup ties in an ultimately successful bid to force their hapless ex-owner out.
Wednesday’s final home game of Chansiri’s reign of terror against Middlesbrough was played in front of a near-empty Hillsborough before fans returned in their droves three days later for the visit of Oxford.
The money subsequently spent has ensured players and staff have been paid on time and will continue to be until a new owner is found.
Administrators have set a soft deadline of the end of this week for offers after 12 parties provided proof of funds of £50million.
But the sales process is now anticipated to go on longer than initially expected due to the volume of interest.
Once a preferred bidder is chosen, they will need to pass the EFL’s fit and proper test and also satisfy the government’s new football regulator.
