Liverpool could yet earn a transfer fee for Trent Alexander-Arnold despite it appearing that the Reds’ vice-captain will see his contract expire before moving to Real Madrid
Trent Alexander-Arnold could yet join Real Madrid before his Liverpool contract comes to an end. The Reds’ vice-captain may even make the move a whole month before his deal finishes – but only if the Premier League club give the green light.
Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Los Blancos when his contract expires at the end of June, with Arne Slot’s side having been unsuccessful in their attempts to persuade him to extend his stay. Real Madrid failed to prise the full-back away from Merseyside in January as they had offers knocked back however.
The Spanish giants have not given up hope of securing the England international’s signature in time for the beginning of the Club World Cup however. To accommodate the new-look competition kicking off in June, FIFA have altered their rules.
A new transfer window has been created lasting from June 1 to June 10 in which clubs will be permitted to sign players to their squad or extend the deals with their current players. Leagues however, will only be allowed a transfer window of 89 days, so if the Premier League opens its ranks in line with the Club World Cup, they will either have to facilitate a break in the window, or close it early.

With Alexander-Arnold’s contract not expiring until June 30, Real Madrid will have to pay Liverpool to acquire his services sooner. The Club World Cup gets underway on June 15, with the La Liga side kicking their tournament off on June 18.
In addition to earning a fee for their vice-captain, Liverpool would also save the cost of the star’s wages for that period. Alexander-Arnold’s last game for the Reds is set to come against Crystal Palace on May 25, though the Spanish side may want to leave a deal as late as they can to save their own costs.
Clubs competing in the United States are also able to add a maximum of two players to their squad during the tournament. An in-competition window between June 27 and July 3 is expected to be available.
Real would need authorisation by both La Liga and the Premier League should they want to bring forward Alexander-Arnold’s transfer and can prove persuasive to Liverpool. Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez are reported to be ‘counting on’ Alexander-Arnold to play some part in the Club World Cup in the United States.
“The objective is to encourage clubs and players whose contracts are expiring to find an appropriate solution to facilitate the players’ participation,” a FIFA statement on the new window said in October.
Premier League clubs are set to vote on the early opening of the window on Thursday.
