WAL BUCK’S (4.25 Haydock, nap)

Lucinda Russell’s lightly-raced six-year-old jumped poorly when a close third over 3m2f at Uttoxeter last time, so it’s fair to assume he’s capable of a great deal more off a 1lb lower mark. He’s hit the line really strongly at trips around three miles, so this step up in distance promises to really suit this potential staying machine. Russell has her string in excellent form and after just five chasing starts this JP McManus-owned riser can improve beyond the reach of his rivals.

SOVEREIGN SEA (6.30 Southwell, nb)

Was a very easy winner on debut at Newcastle. He’s run two huge races under a penalty since, edged out back at Newcastle and most recently, he arrived ever so slightly too late when conceding 7lb to a horse rated 81. His opening mark of 85 looks perfect on that basis and this £170,000 purchase is bred to improve with experience.

TARA ITI (3.05 Huntingdon, treble)

Made a winning hurdling start for James Owen over 2m at the track, quickening up well from off the pace. He’s well-in under a penalty and on his peak form from 2023, he’s still well treated overall, making this look like another good chance.
