Punters’ joy as city to get SECOND Wetherspoons in months with £1.5MILLION venue taking over historic building

WETHERSPOONS fans have been celebrating the news of a second boozer being welcomed to the city within months.

The popular pub will be open its latest local branch on George Street, Bath.

The city already has a Wetherspoons: the ever popular King of Wessex on James Street West.

Development of the site is set to begin soon, with the installation of a new bar among the featured changes that are part of the proposed £1.5 million development.

Previously the location served locals as a Revolution bar.

The official opening date is yet to be confirmed but the pub has sought permission to open as early as 7am.

Currently the site will only be able to open two hours later.

The application says: “Given the site has operated until the early hours of the morning with no complaints raised, it is considered that the earlier opening of the premises would not have a negative impact on the amenity of neighbouring occupants, particularly 7am is a less sensitive time than the consented closing time of the venue.”

Regulars to the existing The King of Wessex site have described the overwhelming crowds that venture to the current site.

It seems for some in the area the chain could not come soon enough but a spokesperson for Wetherspoons told Somerset Live that there is “no opening date at present”.

They added: “Development is still subject to gaining statutory consents; planning, licensing and listed building consent.”

Some details have come to light, with the premise likely to be named The Old Post Office, according to the Wiltshire Times.

This would likely be a nod to the 70 years that the premises ran as such a site, with the Grade II listed building already having the name carved into a band on its front.

It comes as Wetherspoons has plans to open a number of pubs across the UK this year.

The pub giant currently has 796 venues – but this number will surpass 800 by the end of the year.

This includes an opening of a new pub in Manchester Airport Terminal 2 this summer.

Also plans have been approved for a new pub in Fulham Broadway Station.

Last summer, Wetherspoons also completed their £2.2 million refurbishment of the Albany Palace in Trowbridge.

Around 10 miles from the region’s train station, another of the branch has joined this.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW AT WETHERSPOONS

The pub giant said it would slash the price of Guinness to mark St Patrick’s Day, taking place Monday March 17.

To mark the annual celebration, those opting to drink one of Ireland’s most iconic beers only had to pay £3.15.

That means revellers could save a remarkable 12.5 per cent on every pour.

The pub giant offer coincides with the brand’s Monday Club.

Wetherspoons taste test

At the start of almost every week, the promotion sets out a wide range of drinks prices which are all lowered.

Highlights include a pint of Ruddles or Worthington’s for just £1.49, a pint of Carling for £2.49, and a single measure of selected spirits (including a mixer) for £1.99.

Additionally, two cocktail pitchers can be enjoyed for £14.25, while a pint of Strongbow or Abbot Ale will cost £2.39 each.

Those in Scotland, who do not benefit from the club promotion, can still nab a £2.99 pint of Guinness to mark St Paddy’s Day.

How many Wetherspoons sites are opening this year?

WETHERSPOONS is set to open 13 news pubs in the UK this year.

It is thought seven will welcome punters before summer as well as a further four inside Haven Holiday Parks.
