But he was quick to remind his critic of his recent feats, with Humphries also second in the standings in the Premier League.

After his defeat to Littler on Thursday, a fan wrote: “Humphries prime has truly been and gone, when he loses World Number One spot I reckon we’re gonna see him slowly but gradually fall down the rankings.”

Humphries, 30, appeared to be taken aback by the comment which he quickly shot down.

He responded saying: “I’ve literally won two of the last four majors you wally!

“Couple of bad weeks don’t define you. Remember this happened last year the start of the year and look how it ended.”

Humphries backed up his excellent 2023 campaign which saw him climb to No1 and win the World Darts Championship by winning six tournaments.

Two of those were majors – the World Matchplay and the Players Championship – while he also finished as runner-up in the Premier League, World Grand Prix and the UK Open.

That helped him rake in a staggering £1.8million in prize money over the last two years – the biggest sum ever for a darts star.

He could become darts’ first ever £2m man, but Cool Hand revealed it is trophies, not cash, that drives him on.

Humphries said: “It obviously would be really nice to do that.

“It’s not like a goal that you’re looking at and thinking I need to do that. The prize money in darts is just going to go up and up over the next few years, I think everyone knows that.

“It’s probably going to be a common thing, so someone is going to reach the £2 million mark whether I do it or not, but I’d like to be the first one to do it.”
